Beat Müller

Professor Beat Müller has been working as a research associate at the Heidelberg University Hospital since 2006. He became head of the division of minimally invasive surgery in 2010 and focuses on oncologic and metabolic surgery. His expertise comprises the entire spectrum of minimally invasive surgery. He is particularly interested in the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the upper gastrointestinal region, specifically the esophagus and stomach including obesity surgery. Under his leadership the division of minimally invasive surgery was recognized with the certificate status of excellence by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery. Moreover, he commands the complete spectrum of abdominal surgery with a special focus on complex cases of oncologic surgery.

His clinical and scientific career commenced with his medical studies at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He obtained the license to practice medicine in 1997 and received his doctorate degree in 2000. He performed his residency training in general surgery at the Hospital of Aarberg, Switzerland and Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen, Switzerland and concluded his training in visceral surgery at Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany. In 2009 he received the habilitation in surgery and became associate professor at Heidelberg University in 2014.

Beat Mueller’s scientific portfolio includes the successful application and scientific management of a research training group (Graduiertenkolleg), as well as running a collaborative research center (Sonderforschungsbereich) in the field of computer-assisted surgery. Additionally, he initiated and spearheaded multiple renowned clinical trials (MASH, BaSE, DiaSurg, BariSurg). Moreover, he installed a laboratory for metabolic surgery, an experimental OR for researching new technologies and a multimodal training center for minimally invasive surgery techniques. His scientific endeavors yielded more than 100 publications in internationally recognized journals.
